Clarification of the appointment of ‘Umar as Khalifah by Abu Bakr

By Shaykh Muhammad Taha bin Yusuf Karaan

Question:

The Sunni viewpoint that leadership after Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and grant him peace) had to be decided upon through consultation, and you use two verses of the Qur’an to prove their point. However, it is an undeniable fact that the second khalifah, ‘Umar (Allah be pleased with him) was appointed by the first khalifah, Abu Bakr (Allah be pleased with him) and not chosen through some method of consultation. This indicates to me that Abu Bakr went against the Qur’an by not consulting the people, and ‘Umar also went against the Qur’an by allowing himself to be put into a position of power in an illegitimate fashion, i.e. appointment by Abu Bakr. How do you reconcile their action with your theory that the matter of leadership must be decided by consultation with the community?

The Ash’ariyyah and Maturidiyyah

By Dr. Atif Suhail Siddiqui

Excerpted from the unpublished PhD thesis of Dr. Atif Suhail Siddiqui[1]. A study of the two schools of Islamic theology viz. the Ash’ariyyah and the Maturidiyyah.

Founder of Asha’irah
The Ash’ariyyah, sometimes also called Asha’irah or Ash’aris, were a theological school, the followers of Abu ‘l-Hasan al-Ash’ari (d. 324 H). Al-Ash’ari was born in the city of Basra, at that time one of the centres of intellectual ferment in Iraq, which, in turn, was the centre of the Muslim world. It is generally agreed that he belonged to the family of the celebrated companion of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace), Abu Musa al-Ash’ari (Allah be pleased with him), though some theologians opposed to his ideas contested the claim. Since this would have made him by birth a member of the Arab-Muslim aristocracy of the period, he would have received a careful education. Abu ‘l-Hasan al-Ash’ari belonged to a wealthy family, which enabled him to devote himself entirely to research and study.

‘Ashura: A correction of misconceptions and beliefs

By Shaykh Fazl al-Rahman al-’Azami
Translation edited by Ibn Rashid Ahmad Qasmi

The virtues of the day of ‘Ashura, its importance and the reason for its significance have already come to your knowledge. The reason is that Musa (peace of Allah be on him) and the Bani Isra’il were rescued from Fir’awn and his army on this day. As a token of gratitude, Musa fasted on this day. In emulation, Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and grant him peace) also fasted on this day and instructed the Muslims to do the same. While the compulsion to fast on this day has been waived, the fast has still been retained in the Shari’ah as an optional but highly commendable deed. It is perhaps because of this same incident that people are encouraged to spend freely on their families on this day. Allah knows best.

The ‘Ulama of Deoband in opposing falsehood

By Mawlana Moosa Kajee

The ‘ulama of Deoband have surpassed the rest as far as preservation of dīn, opposition of rivals and the reformation of the Muslim Ummah is concerned. They always held fast to the Shari’ah and were never influenced by external factors. The reality of the matter is that, had it not been for Dār al-’Ulūm Deoband, it would be very unlikely that we could have had this opportunity to witness Islām in this pure and pristine form.

Westernism and Christianity: The “East India Company” disguised behind the garb of being a business enterprise, in reality aimed to propagate Christianity and gain Christian political power over India. They constantly interfered in the political, educational, and administrative affairs of the country.

Advices to Students of Knowledge and ‘Ulama

By Mawlana Fadhl al-Rahman ‘Azmi

Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlana Fazlur Rahman Azmi visited the Darul Iftaa Mahmudiyya in Durban, South Africa on Friday 25 November 2011. Mufti Ebrahim Desai requested Hadhrat Mawlana to offer some advice.

These are some of the advices imparted by the honourable shaykh:

Where ever we are and where ever we go, we need to beseech Allah Ta’ala that He makes us a key for opening the doors of virtue and locking the doors of vice (مفتاح للخير ومغلاق للشر).  Shaykh Sayyid Abu ‘l-Hasan ‘Ali al-Nadwi (Allah have mercy on him) once visited our madrassah in Moa during our student days.  He stated,

“I have read countless reports and accounts of history, I have come to the conclusion that whosoever adopts two features, the world will fall on its knees for him.  The two features are:

  1. Exceptional capability (نمايا قابليت)
  2. Genuine spirituality (سچي روحانيت)

These two qualities were apparent in all the Prophets of Allah.  They had excellence in the contemporary art of their time.”
